Daler Rowney Aquafine Watercolour Mini Travel Set Review + Bonus Hacks

We hope you are enjoying the weather this April! It’s the perfect time to participate in #pleinairpril, the challenge to paint one plein air painting each day in April. The Daler Rowney Aquafine Watercolour Mini Travel Set is a convenient pocket-sized palette that’s perfect for this challenge. Join us for this unboxing where we go over some of its features and some ideas, tips and tricks for its use!

External Features

  • Has a ring tab to hold the palette in your hand whilst painting

  • Measures 11.5cm x 9.5cm x 1.5cm – it could fit into your back pocket!

  • Magnetic metal tin – magnets can be used to hold the palette in place whilst you paint outdoors

I personally like to use hardcover sketchbooks and use magnet clips to attach the palette. However, please note this might not be the most stable arrangement and would depend on the strength of your magnets. I wouldn’t apply too much force on the palette if holding the book to paint in this arrangement.

Please note, Dipper featured in this video is not magnetic as they are made from stainless steel. I have attached magnets to this dipper for my personal set up.

Internal Features

  • Waterproof plastic cover to keep tabs on your colours – useful in case you want to buy them again
  • Good quality Size 4 mini travel brush

  • Plastic palette – triangular palette is removable, potentially giving you extra palette painting area. The quality of the plastic palette is a bit thin and might crack with pressure or time. However, the plastic palette is removable.

Once the pans are finished this plastic tray could be removed and replaced with your own half pans and your own paint. Here I have tried inserting Derivan Half Pans into the bottom tray filled with Schmincke Horadam Watercolour Paint. You will need to figure out a way to attach the pans into the metal tray but the bottom tray does fit them in.

Last, but certainly not least, is the paint. Thes set contains both a warm and a cool set of the primary colours, which are good for creating your own colours. It also contains greens and earth tones which are helpful for landscape painting. The paint itself wets easily and is vibrant and richly pigmented. See this test swatch on a sample of Arches Paper:
