Tips for working with watercolour pencils!
Getting Started
Use the right paper: Choose watercolour paper or at least a heavier mixed-media paper. Thin paper will warp or tear when water is applied.
Light layers first: Start with light pressure - you can always build intensity, but it’s harder to lighten after adding water.
Adding Water
Blend gradually: Use a damp (not soaking wet) brush to activate the pigment. Too much water can dilute colour or damage the paper.
Work in sections: Apply water to small areas at a time to maintain control and avoid unwanted bleeding.
Techniques to Try
Dry then wet (classic method): Draw first, then brush over it to create a painted effect.
Wet then draw: Wet the paper lightly and draw into it for softer, more diffused lines.
Dip the pencil tip in water: For bold, intense lines (use sparingly to protect the pencil core).
Colour Control
Blend directly on paper: Layer two or more colours before adding water to create smooth gradients.
Bonus Tip!
Combine dry pencil details on top of dried washes to add texture, outlines, and fine detail - this gives your artwork a polished, professional look.
